How do you rate your last season (using the scale 4-10 where 10 stands for
the best mark)?

Matti

Hmm...It was quite a controversial season, the beginning was truly
wasted, the end of the season was a good one, so that ends up to 9-... But
more than half of the season was quite a struggle.

Sportsplanet

You participated only in the Summer GP's in Hinterzarten and Courchevel.
Did you decide it beforehand, or did you decide to skip the rest based on
your performances in Hinterzarten and Courchevel?

Matti

I decided it on the break after those first events. I was thinking during
Hinterzarten and Courchevel, that if my jumping doesn't get better, I would skip the last 2 events. So, since that didn't happen, I suggested to Tommi Nikunen and Ari-Pekka Nikkola (personal coach) that I would stay home and focus on training. We talked about it and found ít as a good idea.

Sportsplanet

Pekka Niemelä was in charge of your physical training til 2002, now he
works full time for Japanese Team Tsuchiya. Did you get a new coach, or is
Ari-Pekka Nikkola taking care of your physical training also?

Matti

Yes, from this summer on Ari-Pekka has been in charge of my physical
training programs as well.

Sportsplanet

You are wearing Bayern Munchen-shirt, is it your fave soccer team or just a
coincidence you have their logo on your shirt?

Matti

It is  just a coincidence.

Sportsplanet

Your success in Planica World Cups last year was outstanding: 3 victories,
3 World Records. Did that make Planica your fave hill?

Matti

No.. It has been my fave hill for long time now. The principle
is, the bigger hill the better. I like ski flying hills a lot.

Sportsplanet

Did you expect such success in Planica?

Matti

No, it was a way above my expectations. What comes to World records,
after the first one I was absolutely sure somebody is going to fly further.
So, Vellu did that, but fell.

Sportsplanet

So, you must be excited about the fact that Ski Flying WM takes place in
Planica next year?

Matti

Oh yeah, naturally it is nice to go back there for the WM, in case I am
in the team. That is the basic thing, first you have to qualify for the
team. Due to the new suits I assume we'll get even more speed...(grinst)

Sportsplanet

How do you feel about the new suits?

Matti

During the first training I was thinking "I can't jump with these!"
, but after that it has been okay. It just requires more speed,
because you can't fly like with the old suit.

Sportplanet

How are you doing now?

Matti

I am doing good, training hard and competing next in our nationals (in
Lahti Sep 13-14). When jumping is not going well in summer, I don't feel
too bad about it, but if the struggle
goes on during the first snow camps
and after that...then it is all different.
